subject: Profits Are Better Than Wages [print this page]

Striking out on your own after spending time within the warm confines of a corporate job and working up the corporate ladder can be exhilarating and simultaneously unnerving. When you find yourself in a tough spot, or a moment of self-doubt, I invite you to consider the words of Jim Rohn and remember this: Profits are better than wages.

The only true way to guarantee your success and to provide security for your family is to build a sustainable business that provides you with profits. The profits earned from your own business will give you the power to control your future and the future of your family.

Paul McCartney really summed it up with this quote. Somebody said to me, 'But the Beatles were anti-materialistic.' That's a huge myth. John and I literally used to sit down and say, 'Now, let's write a swimming pool.' They understood the power of their ability to sell records and acknowledged that this gave them control and ultimately financial security.

As you take this journey, you will be tempted to quit. An event, or a combination of events, will happen when you are in a particularly vulnerable spot and you will feel like tossing in the towel. You might even consider finding a real job.

Football legend, Fran Tarkenton, describes how after three games in the 1977 season he walked into Coach Bud Grants office and quit because fans were calling for his head on a platter. He left Minnesota and returned home to Atlanta. After a couple of days, he realized that by quitting he was not only letting himself down, but all of his 47 teammates as well. Remembering that Coach Grant had told him that it is okay to want to quit, as long as you dont, he returned to his job.

Everyone has these moments. Sometimes they last for a few minutes and sometimes those moments can stretch out to weeks! Successful people understand that it is perfectly okay to feel like quitting now and again as long as they do not give into the feeling. Instead, they develop tools to help them get through these difficult times and keep themselves on track.

Sometimes they use an internal pep talk to remind themselves that the situation is not permanent. Instead of the focusing on the current set of circumstances that seem to engulf them, they turn their attention to their ultimate goals. By reminding themselves that it isnt time to give up, they can take a few more steps and try a few more things before exhausting all reasonable efforts to achieve their goal.

Another common trait of the successful person is the ability to take time to be grateful for the successes that they have already experienced. By putting the current obstacle in perspective, they are able to recognize that there are many folks in much worse positions (like those with jobs and a boss!). Focusing on the positive will often re-energize their thinking and lead to positive solutions.

There is a much truth in Tony Robbins statement, When you are grateful, fear disappears and abundance appears. Reflecting on the resources, talents, connections and relationships that you have is a great tool in helping you to achieve an attitude of gratitude. Since our minds can only process have one thought at a time, focusing on the things we are grateful for, prevents us from dwelling on the obstacles.

Take time each day to prepare for the unforeseen. Find a few quiet moments and build your mental library of pep talks before you need them. Understand that wanting to quit or give up is normal, and have your systems and tools ready to make sure you do not give into the temptation. Finally, focus on the positive aspects and develop a grateful attitude.
