There's even been speculation among some scientists that the Earth is becoming repolarized, so that magnetic north will soon become magnetic south and magnetic south will become magnetic north.
The Galactic equator and the December solstice sun perfectly align in what is called the Precision of the Equinoxes. Currently most humans place more importance on extrinsic values compared to intrinsic values, and the Mayans thought that this alignment would cause a World age Rebirth process where these priorities would shift.
Some people also believe that solar flares, or large explosions on the sun, could also cause problems with the way electric currents move, and this could cause problems with information being transmitted. If these large solar flares occur many communications processes could encounter problems because of disruption in radio frequencies, the signals from satellites, and the systems that planes use. Not a lot of people understand just how destructive solar flares could be, their power is equal to that of thousands of atomic bombs.
It is important to recognize that the Mayans were not saying that the world was going to end in 2012. Instead, they were simply communicating that a new Life Cycle would be experienced. This would leave one to believe that if any changes are going to occur, they would come in the form of a gradual progression of events happening instead of occurring all at once.
2012 to the Mayans marked the end of the age when man was more interested in material items and concerned himself with only those events that had a direct impact on his life; the end of a Life Cycle, rather than the end of the world.
2012 marks the year where people finally begin to realize that life is about recognizing your inner being and focusing more on intangible items that make your life better. While the prophecy might not be riddled with destructive foresight as once thought, it still is a significant date in terms of a "social awakening" that might be occurring.
