subject: Working With The Dj [print this page] Working with the DJ Working with the DJ
Weve noted lately that some of the wedding services are becoming blurred or are beginning to overlap to the dismay of some vendors. In addition the working environment at weddings, on occasion, has become adversarial between service providers.
Weve witnessed examples of photographers and videographers elbowing for prime shooting space. Weve seen DJs providing free photography or instant projected imagery including video and photo booths at the reception. Weve seen photographers off the street shooting at a wedding on spec interfering with the hired pro. And then there was the priest who tried to direct the formal shooting session. Or the pushy photographer stepping on the gown and pushing past the priest for that special moment. A recent videographer told us about the time he was confronted by the DJ who exclaimed that it was his turn to shine.
Well its not always like that but the wedding industry is going through an interesting period with lots of new players looking to score in this harsh economy and not all are familiar with wedding etiquette. In fact there are some new members to our community that aint got no etiquette period. That being said I wanted to take this opportunity to point out an example of the joy of co-operation.
We recently had the chance to work with a familiar DJ, DJ Sam of Atmosphere Productions. The club we were working had a beautiful ocean view but Sam noted that the cake background seemed a little blah and offered to backlight the wall with a complimentary color wash. I agreed his suggestion was a positive comment and let him know it was fine with me if he checked in with the bride.
She was excited with the idea and Sam set the lights using just the right color wash. I was thrilled with the results and so was the bride. But mostly I was thrilled that a real professional like Sam was there to help add something extra for the couple and me.
It was all done in the spirit of co-operation. That quintessential effort helped to make the day perfect for our client. You see, Sam understood that offering to add a little sparkle to my world helped add a little sparkle to his world which when combined with the co-operation thorough out the day of all the vendors contributed a whole lot of sparkle to the Bride and Groom.
