subject: Grow Dental Implants In Your Mouth [print this page]

Dentistry has traveled a long way since time immemorial to this age of Computer.

When an Adult loses a full grown tooth there were only 2 options Dentures or Dental implants. Not any more. Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center have pioneered a technology that may allow us to regrow our own teeth, in our own mouths. The technique involves using stem cells to grow new teeth, and redirecting stem cells in the patients body to regenerate the tooth right where it was in the first place. Thus, Dental implants and fillings could become history.

A Dental Implant is employed, when a tooth cannot be saved, or in cases where a tooth is lost. If you have gaps in your smile where your teeth used to reside, Dental implants along with artificial teeth are often a good option to fill the gaps left by the tooth loss. However, the process of surgically inserting dental implants in a patients mouth is horrifying. Dentists, embed a cone shaped titanium screw directly into the jaw bone of the patient with the tooth attached on top. The process is painful and there is long healing process.

The findings by the Columbia University researchers represent the first report of regeneration of anatomically shaped tooth-like structures in vivo, and by cell homing without cell delivery. The potency of cell homing is substantiated not only by cell recruitment into scaffold microchannels, but also by the regeneration of periodontal ligaments and newly formed alveolar bone. The team of Columbia University researchers has also successfully grown teeth in Animal testing.

If the above method works, it would make little sense in the future to take care of cavities and other issues with fillings. Simply removing the tooth and growing it back may become the recommended course of action. This method allows the tooth to integrate itself with the surrounding tissues. This technology will also cut down on artificial materials in peoples mouths all over the world in the future.
