subject: Innovations In Cosmetic Dermatology [print this page]

Advances in cosmetic dermatology allow people to improve their appearance without use of surgery. The popularity of non-invasive cosmetic treatments such as Botox and Restylane injections, chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, and other procedures can be used by dermatologists and plastic surgeons to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and age spots.

Injectables

Injectables such as Botox Cosmetic and Dysport can be applied to to paralyze the underlying muscle in areas of the face that are affected by wrinkles. The effects of Botox Cosmetic and Dysport relax facial muscles and wrinkles to produce smoother, fresher, and younger looking skin. Results of these injectables can be seen within a few days and last for three to six months.

Dermal fillers are another type of injectable that can be used to fill in facial wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin, and to plump up the lips. There are many types of dermal fillers available; they all contain different materials, such as hyaluronic acid and collagen, to add volume to specific areas of the face. Popular dermal fillers include Restylane, Radiesse, Sculptra, Juvederm, Perlane, Artefill, and Zyplast. Results of dermal fillers can be seen immediately after treatment and for most fillers, results last from three to six months. The results achieved by Radiesse last up to a year.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels can be used to stimulate the regeneration of new skin. During treatment, a solution is applied to the face and allowed to sit for a set amount of time. The solution is then washed away. In the next few days, the damaged outer layers of skin are removed, revealing fresh skin underneath.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

The laser resurfacing procedure involves use of a laser that is used to remove hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and other skin flaws by stimulating collagen growth. Results of the procedure are evident within a few days, and patients say they are happy with the outcome of the treatment.
