subject: How to Clean a Swimming Pool Sand Filter [print this page] A swimming pool sand filter usually comes equipped with a valve known as a Multi Port Valve. This Multi Port Valve has numerous settings that allow water flow to be directed in different directions. One of these directions is known as BACKWASH. With a Multi Port Valve in the backwash mode the water inside the tank flows in reverse. The water from the swimming pool is fed into the bottom of the tank. The result is that the sand gets churned up and the debris and dirt is flushed out of the tank. Multi Port Valves usually have a sight glass that can be used to view this process. When the water is visually clean the backwash is finished and the pump can be stopped and the valve is now placed into the RINSE mode. Starting the pool pump in the rinse mode will allow the water to flow in the normal direction and will also allow settling to occur in the tank.
If backwashing doesn't clean the swimming pool water, you will have to perform the following task on the swimming pool sand filter.
1. If the sand pool filter has not been taken apart for some time, don't forget to have new o rings available. Old o rings crack and stretch over time and need to be periodically replaced.
2. Remove the old sand from the tank. This can be done by using a sand vacuum or by scooping.
3. Check the bottom laterals for cracks or other damage. Replace any of the laterals that are damaged.
4. Fill the tank half full with clean water.
5. Carefully and slowly add the new sand to the tank. Be careful not to damage any of the laterals in the process. Next, add the proper amount of sand.
6. Reassemble all of the parts that were removed including the valve, dome and top half and replace the o rings if required.
7. Place the Multi Port Valve in the RINSE position and check the valve for leaks. Turn the pool pump off and then place the valve setting back in the filter position. Then simply restart the pool pump and start operating normally.
