subject: Building Self Esteem - The 5 Incredible Ways To Build Your Self Esteem [print this page]

Do you ever feel like something is holding you back from becoming the best you can be? Building self esteem is the key to changing this. When it comes to self-confidence, it is well known that the majority of people are their own worst enemy. Here are 5 secrets to end this destructive pattern of self sabotage:

1. Take care of you! This means eating food that will nourish you and give you the best possible energy for the tasks at hand, on a regular schedule. It also means getting exercise daily. Even 15-30 minutes of stretching or walking does wonders for your outlook, clears your head, and most importantly, it will release endorphins that make you feel invincible. Exercise also improves your posture, which makes you look better and more confident without even losing weight.

2. Beat perfectionism. Achieve this by changing the negative thoughts you keep to yourself. Always use positive language when speaking of others and self, accept compliments instead of shrugging them off, and keep a positive outlook by focusing on solutions, not problems. Use small steps to break down tasks, goals, or habits you wish to change.

3. Ask your friends and family to help you compile a list of your positive traits. Even though this may be difficult, you may be surprised that others see you differently than you realize. We are so critical of ourselves that we don't see the good others see. Read this list back to yourself every day and let them really sink in until you believe them.

4. Use the power of suggestion or self-hypnosis to work on a subconscious level against self sabotage. The Best Me Technique (BMT) is helpful for building self esteem. It involves finding a quiet place to deeply relax and read a script of positive self talk that targets the issue or goal you are focusing on. While in this relaxed state, the mind is open to suggestions. You will also visualize what success will be like and experience the feelings now that you would normally only feel upon achievement of the goal.

5. Get to know yourself and your values and then act on them. Volunteering your time, being kind to others, and being generous causes you to see yourself in a positive light and gives your life meaning and direction.
