Slow Outlook performance gives anyone a headache and leads to irritation. If you dig a bit, you will realize that slow Outlook performance is due to large or increasing size of Outlook PST file. When an Outlook 2007 personal folder file (PST) grows very large, the performance of Outlook is greatly affected and is reduced deliberately because of the amount of disk activity that occurs. In this article, steps or methods are being discussed to fix slow Outlook performance issues.

Actually there are number of steps that you can take to fix slow performance in Outlook, including compressing the PST, configuring Outlook to remove deleted email from the PST and moving old messages to an archive file. All this is done to reduce the size of your Outlook 2007 PST and to improve the speed of Outlook and rectifying Slow Outlook issues. Have a look at all those methods.

Compressing the Outlook 2007 PST File

1.Go to Tools Account Settings in Outlook 2007.

2. Click the Data Files tab.

3.Click Personal Folders, and then click Settings.

4.Click Compact Now. This command causes Outlook to attempt to remove old data from the PST file to reduce its size. Click OK when the process is finished.

Removing Deleted Data from Outlook 2007

1.Go to Start Run. Type regedit without quotation marks and press Enter. This launches the registry editor.

2.Use the folder tree on the left side of the window to navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice12.0Outlook.

3.Right-click on the "Outlook" folder and click "New" and "Key." A new folder is created. Name the folder "PST" and click on it.

4.Right-click in the open area on the right side of the window and click "New" and "DWORD (32-bit) Value." Name the value "PSTNullFreeOnClose."

5.Double-click PSTNullFreeOnClose. Change the number shown in Value data to 1. Click OK and close the registry editor. This configures Outlook 2007 to remove deleted mail from the PST file.

Creating an Outlook 2007 Archive File

1.Click File in Outlook 2007, and then click Archive.

2. Click Archive all folders and click OK to have Outlook 2007 move old messages into the archive file using pre-defined time frames. To control archive settings, go to next step.

3.Click Archive this folder and click a folder. Click the down arrow and select a date on the calendar. All items older than this date will be moved to the archive file. Click OK to create the archive file.

Compressing Outlook PST is best done with PST Compress and Compact software. This software is an apt slow Outlook solution. It compresses multiple PST files in a single compression cycle and blew away slow performance of Outlook by reducing PST file size.
