subject: What is Engineered Wood Flooring? [print this page]

Engineered wood flooring is the latest trend in the flooring market and is an interesting new alternative to Solid Wood Flooring. Though similar in appearance to Synthetic and Natural Wood Flooring, its construction process is different. In Engineered Wood Flooring, a thin layer of hard wood is laid on top of a thick layer of plywood. The top layer is already polished so that as soon as it is laid down, it is suitable to be walked upon. Since it is real wood, it has to be polished regularly to maintain its luster. Engineered Wood Flooring is in high demand because of its economical rate as compared to Natural and Synthetic Wood Flooring and its uncanny similarities to Natural Wood Flooring.

Though it is entirely made of plywood from the inside, its outer appearance genuinely gives the feeling of Natural Wood Flooring. One of the major advantages of Engineered Wood Flooring is its ability to withstand moisture. It is suitable to be applied in basements, kitchens and bathrooms where it has maximum exposure to moisture, though a word of caution is advisable. Even though it works well in moisture exposed areas, too much moisture can damage its top-most layer, which after all, is made of natural wood. Though uncannily resembling Solid Wood Flooring, it is very economical and is readily available in the market. One major disadvantage of engineered wood flooring is that it cannot be polished more than 3 times or it will lose its luster.
