subject: The Immortals Of Meluha By Amish Tripathi [print this page]

Have you often wondered what makes any book become extraordinary from the ordinary? It is the timing of the book. This decision is to be taken by the author as it is his job to anticipate what the readers are looking for. The setting of the book The Immortals Of Meluha (ISBN-13: 9788183860697) is such that any civilization which is facing problems like Meluha, people will get the feeling that a savior like Lord Shiva is on his way. Written by Amish Tripathi, there is some contradiction in the way it is said the suave and methodical Meluhans accepted him as their savior, although their legend had already proclaimed this.

The Tactful Introduction

The Meluhan king Daksha is shown as a practical and docile character who believes in Shiva and he foresees some problems with his people and thats why he introduces Lord Shiva to his people tactfully. It ensures people are not overawed of him and they dont have undue expectations from him either. The army chief Parvateshwar however asks for proof because he saw several aspirants who were not the real ones, disappointing the Meluhans as a result.

Lord Shiva Leads from the Front

Throughout the book The Immortals of Meluha, Shiva easily proves his worth and gets through every battle with panache, and leads from the front. The king doesnt hinder his progress and even protects him whenever he can. The daughter of the king, Sati, is courted by Shiva though she doesnt respond initially. She is very particular about the Meluhan customs and defends it from every challenge. She is chastised by a Taliban like figure for desecrating one Meluhan ritual by her presence, since she had delivered one stillborn child once. Shiva provides some tactical advice to her and she is able to defeat the person and then forgives him.

Sati Comes Close To Shiva

All these incidents get her closer to Shiva gradually though she was guarded in her response initially. It is the fate which brings both of them together time and again. She is rescued by Shiva when she is attacked by the Nagas, and is treated by Somrasa at the advice of Shiva. This is the point in the story when she accepts him finally.

The Lighter Side Of Lord Shiva

The prankier and lighter side of Shiva is also pretty evident in the book and entertains us throughout. His attitude and charisma win over everyone, and so does the author with his sparkling narrative throughout the book. The twist in the tale comes when the average reader believes the battle between good and bad is won, and this twist has been handled brilliantly by Amish Tripathi.
