Piano chords have their fundamentals in piano scales. In free piano lessons online, one can concentrate only on scales that are diatonic in nature if they like. What are diatonic scales? They are - scales that are composed of five complete steps and two semi steps. It is important to know that both major and minor scales are diatonic. Coming back to the composition of half steps and full steps, it is essential to know that half step comprises of immediate adjacent keys and is also known as semi tone. Whole or full step consists of two half steps or semi ones which are in the similar direction.
Thus, it is extremely important to have the knowledge of what makes half steps and full steps before one gets on to the minor and major scales on the piano. In simple language if the pianist is on the C note and moves to note C#/Db, this is a progression which shall be called as a semi step or a half tone. Beside D lies key C, this is a white note and a full one at that! If you move from white tone C to another white tone [note] D, you will take a whole step. The C#/Db is the black key which lies above the white note. Every white note has a black note. If one were to start from C#/Db to D#/Eb tone (note), which is the black note of white note D, it will be the full step that you would have taken. And if you were to take a half step or a semi tone from C#/Db, then you would move to white note D. It is that simple. On your piano set, you would notice that there are black notes or tone in between C, B, F or E. No need to worry about this. All you have to do is to move from E to F to make a half step and move from E to F#/Gb [the black note] to form a full step. You shall follow the same process for B & C as well.
Further in free piano lessons online we will explain the symbols of piano. For example, # after a note implies that you will have to raise a particular note with a half step. Whereas, symbol b means you will flatten or lower the note with a half step. Easy, isnt it?
So, a C# implies that you will raise the note C with a semi tone or half step and lower or flatten the note D by a half step if it is written in Db way. Free piano lessons will help you clear your basic fundamentals and notions regarding piano so that you can play it to become a professional.
