subject: Why Walking Is Such A Great Way To Exercise [print this page]

The benefits of walking as a form of exercise are being recognised by more and more people. You don't need to sign up for an expensive monthly gym membership or buy any specialist equipment. You won't even need to get any special clothing.

All that you really require is a good pair of comfy shoes and outdoor clothing suitable for the climate and you're all set. An mp3 player might be one accessory that you might like to think about. The time, and the miles, will pass very quickly when you're walking along listening to your favourite music.

Walking is suitable for almost everyone after all, most of us do it every day. It is a low impact workout which, in comparison with many other forms of exercise, is virtually injury free. It also has a much lower drop out rate than almost all other types of exercise and it can be continued to a greater age.

There are very few health problems associated with walking. Nevertheless, it is still a physical activity and you do need to apply a little common sense. Build up slowly in the beginning and set yourself realistic goals. Should you feel any discomfort or pain then stop exercising and make an appointment to see your doctor.

If you are more than 30 lbs overweight, if you haven't exercised for some time, if you have any cardiovascular problems or if you have high blood pressure then it would be advisable to get your doctor's opinion and advice before you start any new fitness program. However, even if you do suffer from any of these symptoms theres no need to despair. Be sure to listen to your doctors advice, take it easy to begin with and walking will probably improve your condition.

Walking has many benefits. It can help to lower your blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and increase the stamina and efficiency of your heart and lungs. You will feel less tired and be more mentally alert in general. If you walk on a regular basis, you will shed inches and lose weight without ever having to visit a gym or starve yourself on the latest and greatest diet craze. Most importantly, you will feel better overall and, if you want to, you will probably be better able to take part in other physical activities due to your improved level of fitness.
