Especially in those summer months if you know what I mean. Have you ever wondered what the best way to clean a hat is? If you are like me, you pobably ruined more than one hat by throwing it in the dryer or even the dishwasher. Read on and find out how to avoid damaging your hat while getting everything clean!
To Clean A Baseball Hat:
Traditionally, there are 2 major concerns when washing a baseball cap: The shape and condition of the brim, and then any possible shrinking or warping. Luckily, thanks to the wonders of technology, new baseball cap brims are generally made of plastic and not prone to warping like older cardboard style brims used to.
General shrinking is a tougher subject and really depends on the material that the hat is made out of. If a cap is made out of cotton or polyester (most caps), they should wash without much issue. Wool hats on the other hands (think most fitted caps), can shrink when exposed to heat and water.
So with all this in mind, here are two guidelines that will keep your hats looking great and in good condition:
1. For newer polyester or wool hats (hats made after the year 2000 or so), it will be enough to throw them in the washer with regular laundry. After washing, let air dry or fan dry and everything should be perfect. Do not throw these types of hats into the dryer.
2. If machine washing seems too rough for your tastes, another method is to wash your hat in the kitchen sink. Simply run some lukewarm water, and then use a decent quality laundry detergent of your choice to gently scrub the hat. The goal is not to get the hat soaked but rather to scrub all the dirt and salt out of the hat and then to rinse it all out.
