It is brought on by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium. It infects areas in the body such as the urethra and rectum in both sexes, and the cervix in women. If it's undiagnosed, long-term infection can lead to fertility problems in women. Chlamydia is transmitted via genital contact and sexual intercourse with someone already infected. Symptoms usually show between one and three weeks after exposure but may not emerge until much later.
