In the centre of Wiltshire lies a charming market town named Devizes, which grew up around a castle. The town was founded in the Nomadic times and named after the Latin word 'ad Divisas'. The name is an indication of the fact that the town lies at the boundaries of other surrounding villages such as Worton, Lavington, Urchfont, Stert, Seend, Rowde, Roundway and others. The castle was demolished during the Battle of Roundway Down in the 16th century and was rebuilt again in Victorian times and remodeled into flats. In St John's Alley, you will find the famous hat shop that has survived since the 16th century.

It was during the Georgian times that some of the most splendid buildings were erected in the town. Devizes is one of the most densely concentrated because there are five hundred listed buildings in the town.

There is a hive of activity around the Market Place and this is because all the restaurants, pubs, coffee shops and shops can be located. The centre surrounds an indoor market and bargain hunters should browse the nearby roads and alleys.

Shire horses deliver beer and ale from the famous Wadworth's brewery that is located to the northern part of The Market Place. People are able to tour and sample the wares at the brewery.

At the weekly continental markets and farmers' markets, you can find a wide range of items that you may not find anywhere else. There are many independent shops in Devizes that offer great service.

The town has two museums and there is a wealth of information about the history of the town. Items and materials from the Wiltshire Heritage Museum are often used in TV programs. These TV shows are usually about archeology from the Bronze Age. The Kennet and Avon Canal Trust Museum overlook the canal and is situated on the wharf.

Tourists often visit and buy flowers from the Broadleas Gardens, which is situated at the southern part of the town. The garden is most popular for the stunning display of camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas.

The town is engulfed by scenery that is picturesque and this blends beautifully with the old villages and grand homes amongst waterways that are tranquil. It is the perfect setting for taking a walk, cycling or jogging.

Devizes - Wiltshire is a charming little market town where travelers can stop over on their way to bigger towns such as Marlborough, Swindon, Stonehenge or Bath.
