subject: The Healthy Smoothie: Great Tasting And Highly Nutritious [print this page] Many of us are caught up in such a hectic lifestyle that our health has become compromised because of poor nutrition. These days, supermarket shelves are lined with unhealthy processed foods that contain nothing but empty calories. Such foods are loaded with saturated fats, refined carbohydrates and white flour and sugar. When it comes to the food we eat, we have settled for what is convenient and easily available. The problem is, such foods are grossly lacking in nutrition and contain a lot of fat and calories.
There is a solution to the problem, a creamy smooth drink packed with nutrients and it is called a smoothie. It can be an excellent power drink provided the right and healthy ingredients are used to make them. A smoothie in the morning will supply you with all the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables.
A nice morning smoothie can have some greens in it. Believe it or not but green smoothies taste great and contain a lot of nutrients. When I whip up a smoothie, I make sure it is loaded with vitamins by including kiwi, banana, strawberries, blueberries, mango, and greens such as baby spinach. To boost it even more, I blend it up with coconut water which is fat-free and rich in potassium and electrolytes. The fruity taste of the smoothie is nicely complimented by the sweet flavor of coconut water. Needless to say, this is a really healthy concoction. You can hardly taste the spinach as it gets lost in all the fruity flavors in the smoothie. Although the smoothie may have the color of grass, it is pure fruit in taste, very refreshing and delicious.
A glass of this breakfast smoothie provides 6 servings of fruits and vegetables which already meets the daily recommended allowance. It's an excellent way to start the day and it sets me off to another day of healthy eating. For lunch I go for vegetables by eating a small salad. And for dinner I have fresh steamed vegetables with a small serving of meat. The vegetables serve as my main meal and the meal becomes the accompaniment. This way I am able to keep my meals balanced.
Smoothies are a high quality and very easy to prepare health food. If you want to keep it low calorie skip the milk, ice cream or yogurt. With all the fruit and vegetable varieties, there really is no limit to the variety of healthy smoothies you can whip up.
