subject: To Floss Or Not To Floss, That Is The Question [print this page]

Dental care is extremely importantDental care is extremely important. If dental hygiene, as a science, were not as far advanced as it is, we as a civilization would not be as far advance as we are. Fact. The two are exponentially linked. Imagine we never brushed our teeth ever and no one had invented toothpaste and we just picked food from our mouths with sticks. Imagine we had no idea that sugary drinks are bad for our teeth or that smoking can cause serious damage to gums. The truth is that without dental hygiene advancing when it did people would for a long time have been dying out before they reached middle age because all their teeth would have fallen out and their diets would have suffered.

With our delightfully advanced dentally savvy civilization, we are lucky that we have such a variety of ways to keep our teeth gums and mouths healthy, in line and in top chomping condition. Even when eventually they do fall out due to old age, we can make exact replicas of our teeth; stick them in and its back to chewing gum and steak and brazil nuts.

Here are the best ways to keep your teeth clean and mouth fresh

Brush your teeth

Twice a day is best, and with a good quality toothbrush. Worn out brushes will make little difference to your teeth while brushes which are too firm can do more damage than good. Before brushing, don't put water on your brush as this only dilutes the toothpaste. As you brush let the froth spill from your mouth, or spit regularly as there is no benefit from letting dislodged particles swim around your mouth. Brush in all directions, and on the fronts, backs, undersides and in between teeth.

Floss

Flossing is something which seems to divide people. Either you swear by it and do it every day, morning and night, or you avoid it like the plague. While its affect on your dental hygiene may be negligible, it can do some good, especially if you have something stuck between your teeth. Use a long piece and floss between every single tooth, making sure to scrape between your gum and the bottom of your toothy as that is the crucial part.

Mouthwash

Mouthwash is like that little bit of flare at the end of your dental hygiene routine. It can give you that extra fresh feeling to feel satisfied that you have killed every last bit of nasty bacteria in your mouth. Try not to swallow it though.

Dental hygiene is something we should all consider as a matter of habit, both for keeping your mouth and teeth healthy, as well as for keeping your breath fresh. Remember we owe our civilization to dental hygiene so it demands your respect.
