subject: Should I Take A University Gap Year? [print this page]

For any person leaving high school the decision about wether or not to take a gap year is a difficult one. There are an enormous amount of reasons for and against. But most importantly does the idea appeal to you strongly enough? which would you prefer? Because taking a year out of your life purely for the sake of it seems pretty pointless. Especially when going to University can give you just as much of a buzz as travel. In the end it all depends on you.

It is easy however to just keep it simple and go onto Uni. After all it is the safe option, but it is also just as easy to take a year out for yourself (because it is also the safe option) The end result: Uni and travel will always be there which ever you choose.

But here are some pros and cons from a gap year person who is about to go to uni

Pros:

* Employees have been shown to value gap years. Enough to include a question in the job application form of wether or not you took one.

* A "constructive" gap year can help a high-school mind prepare for the work place and uni By furnishing skills, like communication and decision making.

* To an employer, fun alone won't be a positive factor It has to be constructive.

* For your self. taking 12 to 15 months out of your life and self can be life altering.

Cons:

* You'll be a year behind your friends.

* You'll lose the desire to study. But university or the wrong course could do it to.

* Travel will win your heart, and you will find it difficult to settle back into a "comparatively" boring routine.

* You'll be seduced by money and what you can buy with it.

* You might be seduced for real and give up your future for marriage.

So its all up to you really. Do as much thinking as possible.

Let it bubble around your head for awhile and something will rise to the top.
