Even clear nail polish can be very visible on a rug, and colors like pink, purple, red, and others are highly visible and objectionable. So how can you remove it?
First of all, time is important. It's easier to remove when it's fresh than once it's been there a while. Water and water based cleaners and solvents will not remove it. You need something stronger.
Nail polish remover is an obvious thing to try. Although not designed for rugs or carpets, it will often do the trick. It can damage or discolor some however, so first apply a little bit to an inconspicuous area and see what happens. Rub it in gently with a damp rag and see if any discoloration or visible damage occurs. If not, you are ready to try it.
Put some on a rag and rub gently. Gentle rubbing will usually work, If not rub more vigorously until it comes out. If a little discoloration remains you can try another rag with a bit of vinegar (white) and gentle detergent.
If the nail polish remover does not work, try acetone which is available at any hardware store. Once again test it somewhere discrete before using it on the affected area, Apply as described before, and if any stain remains use vinegar and gentle detergent as above.
This is not guaranteed to remove all nail polish, but it has always worked me and many others. Hopefully it will work for you too.
