subject: Reasons To Choose Traditional Gifts [print this page]

If youre on the lookout for a suitable gift for a youngster, say for a Christmas or birthday present, then you could do worse than to have a look at some traditional gifts. Long established favourites board games like Scrabble and Monopoly, train sets, slot car racing games etc. have stood the test of time for a reason.

There are so many options for kids today but the large majority of them will prove to have a somewhat limited lifespan. Video games are an extremely popular choice, whether for standard consoles or for mobile devices. The problem is that the majority of them have a specific target - or a definite ending. When they are finished then they are no longer interesting.

There are some exceptions games such as Wii Sports dont have a defined ending. If you can find someone who feels like a game of golf or bowling then you can keep on playing Wii Sports without getting bored. However, this is probably the exception that proves the rule and the majority of video games have a pre-determined goal which has the effect of limiting the useful life of the game.

There are other toys apart from video games which do well for a while but then either vanish completely or gradually diminish in popularity after a relatively brief period of time. A lot of these are associated with movies or kid's TV shoes - Yugi-Oh, Pokemon and Transformers are just a few examples. Demand for these does seem to peak and then tail off although Transformers are now on their second, or possibly third, time around.

If you decide to choose the latest hot, "must have" toy then it will probably be gratefully receive. However, you will require to keep abreast of the latest developments and be certain that you know what's trendy and what isn't. If you're buying for your own children then this may not be too big a problem. You will most likely receive regular bulletins as to what toys are trendy - whether you wish to or not. If, on the other hand, you're buying a gift for a nephew, a niece or a grand-child, then you may not be so well informed as to the very latest fads and it's easy to make a mistake.

Sticking with a traditional stalwart Barbie, GI Joe (Action Man in the UK), Monopoly, a train set etc. means that your gift, whilst it may not necessarily be the very hottest craze right now, will always be welcome. It will also be more probable to give pleasure for a longer timespan as children to tend to return to these types of toys repeatedly.
