subject: Benefits Of Wavefront Lasik Surgery For Correcting Eye Defects [print this page]

Lasik surgery has replaced the conventional eye surgery to great an extent. Surgeons perform lasik surgery to correct the shapes of eye cornea to remove myopia, astigmatism or hyperopic. The operation is done using laser. This surgery has many benefits as compared to other surgery procedures and is preferred over them. There is a particular category of lasik surgery known as wavefront lasik. The surgery eliminates use of glasses or contact lenses.

Wavefront lasik is very highly accurate and perfect. A wavefront sensor is utilized for undertaking the eye operation. The laser in this case is controlled with a computer. The perfect shape of eye cornea is achieved with this technology. However, the experience and expertise of the surgeon is most important factor to get the most accurate results with wavefront.

This also involves some preoperative actions. The patient has to stop using glasses or contact lenses about one to three weeks prior to surgery. The ophthalmologist keeps observing the condition of the eye cornea of patient to decide about the treatment to be given. The irregularities or deformations of the eye are noted.

The surgery is normally done without use of any anesthesia; in many cases a mild sedative is used. The patient is conscious at the time of doing wavefront lasik operation. The surgery comprises three main steps. First step is flap creation, second one is laser remodeling and the last one is flap repositioning. First of all a corneal suction ring is placed in the eye and next a flap is formed. Patient may sometimes feel uneasiness, for that a sedative is used to avoid any discomfort.

The second step in wavefront lasik is remodel ling of cornea that is done with a very precise control. Tissue is removed from eye using laser. It becomes very convenient for the surgeon to do the operation. This accelerated recovery of vision and results in lesser pain to the patient as compared to other surgery procedures. The patient may have a blurred vision while repositioning of flap in wavefront lasik procedure.

To remove the corneal defects, eye reshaping of stoma layer is done using lasik procedure. After correcting the cornea, the ophthalmologist repositions the flap very carefully. It requires a number of precautions when the e eye flap is put in position again. There should not be any air bubbles or debris under the flap. Eye will heal in a proper way only if the flap is installed in perfect position.

A few medicines are needed after the operation. These medicines include antibiotics and anti-inflationary eye drops. After the wavefront lasik surgery, the patient is provided with eye covers and is advised to sleep for a longer time. The drying of eyes is to be avoided. Post operative eye care is very essential so that the surgery is successful.
