subject: What Is Blood Fractionation? [print this page]

With an increasing number of people accessing health care services, one of the problem medical facilities managers are faced with is the increased work-flow in blood-analysis facilities - the labs where tests are made to determine for instance the general health state of a patient.

The labs are the place where one of the most important parts of the diagnostic process takes place - blood fractionation. Here samples prevailed from patients are separated into their basic constituents and undergo a detailed scrutiny for levels of sugar or cholesterol, and even a thorough count of white cells, if samples are screened for signs of leukemia.

As such, test labs for blood analysis are of key importance in the activity of a medical facility and running them efficiently is paramount for offering successful health care services.

In the not so distant past, the operation was done manually by specially trained lab personnel, employing either chemical or mechanical techniques and using technology which made results approximate at best. Moreover, it involved close supervision in order to prevent mixing up samples, to ensure proper labeling and manipulation.

The task was time consuming and laborious at best. It presumed employing a highly qualified workforce, which translated into higher financial resources needed for paying wages instead of being invested.

Both methods however are cumbersome and time consuming at best. Trained personnel is required to assist the fractionation process in order to ensure samples are not mixed up, that they are correctly labeled and manipulated during the process. The use of highly qualified personnel translates into a higher level of financial resources immobilized for wage-payment instead of investment.

Modern solutions for blood fractionation are able to process up to 500 blood samples per day with close to minimum human intervention, providing an unparalleled level of precision and accuracy.
