It is all about whether we are ready enough to sustain the change we are looking forward to.The change which is surely positive in nature but would tend to neglect the internal dynamics of an organization which is not only its infrastructure (which is to some extent assessed in detail before a technological or a managerial change is initiated) but it gets equally (if not more) critical to assess the overall adaptability of which the main constituents are the Management systems-Processes-People. Endogenous Factors: People readiness, their abilities, delivery skills, management perspectives, effective utilization of resources (Time-People). Exogenous Factors: Market dips, downturs as the ones we are facing today Here we are looking at the controllable factors which probably we tend to loose control on, because the management system, inspite of the fact that that it has been built using the best of the available technologies,it does not take the exogenous impact rather it gets dependent on the endogenous input and this is where we tend to overestimate in terms of the available manpower and delivery that could be generated. What is important is not the manpower and the hands to deliver but the people engaged to be utilized fully if not pushed to the corner and our experience says that one could deliver the same amount of work with relatively lesser people if the resource utilization (Time-People) are effectively utilized. At this stage there could be a question probably in your mind what could be done if an accreditation requires us to keep a minimum set of people even if they are more than what would be required to deliver Yes, but in this case we need to understand the sensitivity of adding every two hands and assess if the work being delivered by the existing work force is optimum which tends to get neglected. The reason we get overboard and then look forward to retrenching is that we compromise on the existing deliverability and the easiest way out could be to get more people or to lay them off in the middest of their careers but in this race we tend to increase our fixed cost even if we limit ourselves on the variable component. The effects of a lay off in this scenario could be even worse as without the right assessment of the per person suitability and delivery, we could tend to layoff the wrong skill which might seem redundant at that point of time. Here we need to be very objective and quantitative in our assessment. What could help is not to acquire a prefabricated system and mend it to your needs trying to put a square peg in a round hole or vice versa but what would really help is a customized-manually designed system comprising of system elements and controls through a close interaction with the clients/organizations that are looking forward to enduring their management systems and this will automatically take into account the needs and fears at all he levels of the organization related to the initiated change. We do support automation and adopting standard tools for management but we see a need to have a robust platform which would act like a core platform on which new and advanced modules could be plugged in. (Our experience has shown that many large manufacturing giants have shown interest in deploying six sigma and other high end statistical controls but have not been successful to that extent due to a non availability of a robust core platform.) A multi tier CONNECTED-MANAGEMENT SYSTEM ELEMENTS arrangement would help sustain the market turbulence and on the other side provide downturn sustenance. Few of the many benefits of this approach: Optimized work force. Getting downturn ready. Utilizing downturn for growth and minimizing panic. Utilizing existing resources effectively. Meaningful data obtainance. Effective monitoring. Improved reporting at all levels of the organization. About the Author:
