One of the latest birth control products is the Nuvaring vaginal contraceptive device. Nuvaring is a plastic ring that a woman inserts into her vagina once each and every month. The ring then secretes a mix of low dose hormones into the woman's system. The two primary hormones are estrogen and progestin, common hormones used in most types of contraception.
Nuvaring Side Effects
The most common side effects of Nuvaring are dizziness, nausea and headaches. In many cases, infections of the vagina (vaginitis), the upper respiratory system and the sinuses often occurs, along with noticeable and considerable weight gain. All of these side effects are explicitly listed in Nuvaring's warning literature.
Though most of these common side effects can be treated medically through antibiotics and painkillers, often the symptoms often will not disappear until the user stops using the Nuvaring device entirely.
Other Nuvaring Side Effects Are More Dangerous
Unfortunately, the Nuvaring problems do not end with the easily treated common side effects. Also noted in the contraceptive's warning literature are a number of dangerous side effects that can present serious health risks to the women who use Nuvaring. These side effects include cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary diseases that lead to heart attacks and strokes, for women with no family history of either condition.
For Nuvaring users with other risk factors, the risks of heart attacks or strokes rise considerably. Such contributing factors as smoking, alcohol use, and a genetic disposition for either condition increased the risk that users of Nuvaring would suffer a heart attack or a stroke.
