subject: The Magnificent Se Cathedral: Goas Portuguese Heritage [print this page]

The origins of the Dominican Se Cathedral situated in Old Goa go back to the conquering of Goa by the Portuguese in 1510. . Dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, it remains one of the holiest sites for Indias Christians. The construction of the current building commenced in 1562. At the time of its completion in 1619, the cathedral which has been listed as a World Heritage Site was the largest in Asia. A church of great magnificence, it was intended to be worthy of the wealth, power and fame of the Portuguese who dominated the seas from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

The architecture of the cathedral is marked by a fusion of styles portraying both Portuguese and Gothic elements. While the exterior follows with the simple elegance of Tuscan architecture, the interior is decorated in the ornate Corinthian manner. Originally comprising two towers, the subsequent collapse of one has now given the building a unique structure. The cathedral houses eight chapels and fifteen altars. Of these the Chapel of the Cross of Miracles decorated with exquisite filigree work is of special interest since it is believed that a vision of Christ appeared there in 1919. It is also said that the cross has been gradually increasing in size since then. The cathedral walls are hung with beautiful, antique paintings. It is also renowned for its 5 bells of which the Golden Bell dates back to the 17th century, is considered to be one of the most melodious in the world. A visit to this historic and magnificent cathedral is a must for visitors to Goa.
