subject: Some Tips For Buying Formal Boy's Clothes. [print this page]

Buying formal clothes for children may sound easy enough, but there are several things that need to be kept in mind. Any parent will tell you how easy it is to make the wrong choice and this can prove to be an expensive mistake! Even if you are able to take the clothing back to the store, (or send it back if you bought it online) it is just an unnecessary hassle. Here are a few tips to help you make the right choice when you are looking for formal children's clothes.

Know the right size.

You need to make absolutely sure that you buy the correct size. Now, this may sound like common sense, but garments can vary quite a lot from one manufacturer to another. Dont take it for granted that your eleven year old child needs a boys shirt in an 10-12 year old size; he may need a size that is smaller or larger than this. If a shirt is too big then it can be just as uncomfortable as one that is too small, restricting movement and feeling bunched up. Of course, children too come in all shapes and sizes.

Getting the right fit for your child can be quite a fine balance; it doesnt want to be too tight, but it should have a little room for growth.

Fastenings.

Depending on the age of your child, you will need to give some thought to different fastenings. Trousers with an elasticised waist are always a good idea for younger children, as are shirts with Velcro rather than buttons. Velcro will also give a little bit which allows for a childs growth.

Older kids will want grown-up fastenings on their smart new clothes, but will they be better off with buttons or press studs on their shirt?

Fabric.

Shirts and trousers are available in several different materials and you will need to decide which will be the most comfortable for your child. Cotton is always a good idea as it will help to keep the wearer cool during the summer months; it is also quite a strong fabric.

Many modern shirts for boys will have been coated with a special flame retardant solution which is a very good idea. It will tell you on the label if a garment has been treated with this.

Where to buy.

You will find there is no shortage of childrens clothes suppliers, but some are much cheaper than others. It is always worth having a look online, if possible, as internet-based companies will often have lower prices than their high street competitors. You will also find plenty of information about any garments before you commit to buy.

What your child is happiest with.

Now, we all like our children to look smart, but we have to dress them in something they are happy with! After all, they are the ones who have to wear the clothes. Ask your child which shirts or trousers they like the look of and if they choose something overly expensive (which children can be very good at!) then try to meet them half way.
