subject: Remaining Fit For Longer Living [print this page]

As you grow older, you will notice that you are not as vigorous and energetic as before. You would start to feel your age. Don't worry, it is normal. It is experienced by many people, especially those live mostly sedentary lives including those with low-activity jobs or those who are jobless.

If you spend most of your time sitting still then you are not using many of your muscles. As they say, move it or lose it.

We all know that this type of inactivity can be the cause of serious physical problems. It may make your life shorter. What can you do about it? It's easy. You have to get more active.

One answer is to go to the gym and work out a few times a week. Another is to do similar exercises in your own home.

For many of us, though, time is a factor. So, if you work in an office, for example, try doing simple leg lifting exercises at your desk. Also, if you work in a building with several stories, try taking the stairs, rather than the elevator.

Also, if you don't live too far out of town, you could go out to pick up food instead of having it delivered. Just leaving the house means you will do more exercise than if you had just picked up the phone.

Another thing that you can do is get involved in some sort of activity, especially with family or friends. A jogging or bike riding club would be great. Playing a sport, like baseball, is also a good thing to try.

In warm months or if you have access to indoor facilities, you might even take up swimming. The idea here is that any movement is better than none and you can gradually become more active over time, possibly even adding years to your life.
