How to Introduce Pre Employment Testing (Psychometric Testing)

By Mason Duchatschek

Here's a question for you. How do you introduce the concept of pre employment testing to job applicants as part of your employee selection process?

Ideally, the conversation should go something like this:

"Thanks for applying for a job here at ABC company. To match the best applicants with our available positions in a way that is fair, consistent and non-discriminatory, we have put together a rather thorough selection process. It includes the review of your application, skills, experience, resume, as well as the results of interviews, assessment surveys, background checks and drug tests.

We consider a variety of factors including the quality of the other applicants. We know that nobody is perfect and we don't expect you to be. However, we do expect that the information you provide us with will be accurate and truthful. As part of our verification efforts, if we discover otherwise, we may deny or rescind a job offer later."

There are several reasons for having this conversation. First, you want to let applicants know that there are a variety of factors you consider and that the results of their pre employment tests (psychometric tests) are not the sole reason for hire/no hire decisions.

Second, you want them to know that you are going to be thorough and will verify the information they provide to you. High risk candidates may remove themselves from consideration immediately and save you countless hours of work and unnecessary expense. Others often admit things about themselves that they might not have shared otherwise.

Finally, it's a good idea for applicants to know that you have a consistent and fair process that everybody goes through. When your employment selection process is explained, it helps applicants feel like they got a "fair shake" and were treated well by your organization.
