According to the Mayan long count calendar the end-date will happen on December 21, 2012. Does this mean the end of the world will occur on that year? Or will it be a new era of enlightenment for us all?
It's not hard to believe the murmurs of an oncoming doomsday because there have been so many recent world changing developments and disasters. Great earthquakes seem to rock our world every year from China to Turkey to New Zealand. The tsunami in Thailand killed thousands of people in 2004. There is civil unrest all over the Middle East and parts of Russia. Talks of nuclear weapons in North Korea and India and political strife are rampant. Not only that but as many environmental experts have said, our earth is heating up and even a single degree change in the earth's temperature could mean catastrophe for every living thing on this planet.
What do we really know about the year 2012? Is this panic just another Y2K phenomenon or is this the real thing? Should we prepare for the end of the world? If yes, HOW do we prepare for it?
Some people say there is no basis for all this doomsday talk. The Mayans themselves do not believe in the end of the world scenario and there are no warnings of disaster in their ancient texts or inscriptions. But why is talk about 2012 so prevalent? There must be something behind it all.
Why did the Mayans end their calendar on that date which happens to coincide with the winter solstice? Author John Major Jenkins posited that a galactic alignment will take place on that date and that the Mayans constructed the calendar around astrological events. While the Mayans didn't believe disaster would take place on this year, they thought that a spiritual change would occur instead. An age of enlightenment like the Renaissance will emerge and our world will change for the better.
Some people have taken Jenkins' hypothesis of galactic alignment and now say that the alignment could create a super massive black hole in our galaxy. Others predict an event like the extinction of life like the mass deaths of the dinosaurs.
So what can ordinary people to prepare for what will come? Do we build bomb shelters or stock up with food? Do we stop paying our mortgages and the children's college fund? Or do we start living our lives like we won't be here in 2 years time? It's difficult to plan when we don't know exactly what's going to happen? I don't recommend doing anything drastic just yet. Keep paying your mortgages and keep your kids in school for now. Don't start panicking but continue to find out the truth about the year 2012.
