subject: How could Jesus make such a claim! continued by:Tom Dennis [print this page]

If you read this account of Jesus interacting with his followers, John 14:5-14, you will see that Jesus had claimed to be the way to heaven, the source of ultimate truth, and the source of life.

Jesus goes on to say that to know him is to know the Father. Who is the Father? Is Jesus talking about Joseph? You know Joseph, the guy in the manger scenes at Christmas, the husband of Mary, Jesus' mother. No, Jesus can't be talking about Joseph. Before Jesus was born, before Mary and Joseph were even married, Mary was visited by an angel and told that even though she was a virgin, God would place his son inside her and she would give birth to the Son of God. You can read this account yourself in the Bible, in the book of Matthew chapter one, verses 26-38. Imagine Joseph's surprise when his virgin fianc turned up pregnant. The conversation could have sounded like this: "Say, Mary, you've been hitting the ice cream and pickles pretty hard lately, you're even putting on a little weight before the wedding. You may want to watch yourself at the dinner table. You want to look hot in your wedding dress." Wink, wink. "And your negligee that I bought you for your wedding gift." (Yes, Joseph was probably a typical man.) Then Mary would look into her husband's eyes so innocently, "Joseph, I meant to tell you, I'm pregnant. But, I haven't been with a man, and as you know, not even with you. But don't worry, God miraculously placed His son inside me and I am going to give birth to the Messiah." Say What? Needless to say, Joseph didn't buy the story at first. It took another visit from the angel to verify the story to Joseph himself before Joseph would believe. Go ahead, check out the story yourself.) So, while Joseph took on the role of an earthly father, the real father of Jesus is God Himself.

And then Jesus says that the way to God and heaven is through him

Do you find this all a little hard to believe? But if you believe that God is all-powerful, maker of the earth and all that, then why couldn't he miraculously place his son inside a young virgin fianc?

After all, he is God.
