subject: Disable Hibernation in Windows Products [print this page]

While most people fully grasp what Windows hibernation mode is, quite a few do not, we hope to describe a bit about it in this posting. You can find factors this selection can be quite useful, and just as many reasons that it can be described as a hindrance. We will also talk about how you can turn on or disable hibernation inside the pc settings if you wish to.

It goes without having to mention that every Windows environment is different, and also the different setups and versions of Windows do not have the hibernation mode automatically enabled. In case you are unsure your computer has hibernation enabled we have an easy technique to check, visit your start menu and click the shutdown option. If hibernation option is there and you can select it (not grayed out), then it is active on your system. If you don't see it, or if it is grayed out, this means it is either not setup or not activated. There are many reasons why this might occur, however, the most typical is your computer's motherboard bios has been left it in the disable hibernation mode. Reboot your computer and get into the bios to enable it if you wish to apply it.

Hibernation differs than the sleep mode since it actually takes an image of your current activity and saves it to your hard drive, then turns all power off of your pc. Sleep mode usually may store activity in RAM and then turn off the computer monitor or hard drive, but not the power to the computer. After that whenever you jiggle your mouse it will come back on. Hibernation, you would have to power back up the pc.

It is pretty standard that actual desktop users will select to turn off hibernation should they feel it doesn't work properly, or if it gets to be an irritation. Hibernation could power down your computer while you are listening to music if no activity is found. On the flip side, for the many laptop users, hibernation is a benefit. This can easily be very helpful to help save battery life.

If your pc is using this function and you wish to disable it, you can perform the following steps to disable hibernation mode (note this is for Windows 7):

1.Select your start menu in task bar

2.Open up Run

3.Enter cmd.exe and hit enter

4.At command prompt enter 'powercfg -h off" without ' and hit enter

Now you have turned off hibernation for this computer. Each edition of Windows has different methods and commands to turn hibernation off or on. In the end, it is up to an individual if they believe using this option is right for them.
