subject: Is Your Greetings Card Looking A Bit Green Today? [print this page]

It doesnt take much to realise that the production of greetings cards is not be most ecologically damaging compared to the major industrial manufacturing industries that occur on this planet .

Now you may say I am wrong but lets have a quick think about whats involved with perhaps the manufacturing of a fridge freezer. Think of the raw materials that have to be extracted, the energy used to transform these materials into a usable material and the huge amount of pollutants used throughout the long an exhaustive manufacturing process. Compare that with the production of a birthday card and you will surly agree that the two are on completely different scales.

However there is no hiding from the fact that yes the card industry does create its own scale of pollutants and damaging environmental factors. In todays age people are all too much aware of the detrimental and damaging effect any sort of pollutant could be having for the earth and the card industry is just as much part of this as Bosch producing the Fridge.

To this end there has been great development within the card industry to try and confront the issues there are underlying with the manufacturing of the cards in regards to the ecological cost of doing so. Looking at it from a broad spectrum there are two main areas that companies can look at to improving their green nature. Firstly there are in house aspects they can address within their own company, trying to use the very best practices when producing a greeting card. This mainly involves their overall efficiency in the process of how their materials are used and in what why are they used to get the end product. The second aspect is for the sourcing of their raw materials, investigating the origin of the raw materials and their print and production processes to determine if beneficial changes can be made.

I was pleasantly surprised when I bought a birthday card for my sister from Gift of Cards to find that the card I was buying was not only produced using recycled materials for both the card , envelope and plastic sleeve but also that the ink they used was an organic vegetable based ink that was green to the environment. A great start in such a large industry, helping show that its every man and women who can help in making this world a less polluted place, Its not just for the large giants of industry to decide when its time to make changes to our environment.
