Phone calls are cheap, literally costing pennies or less per conversation. And over the course of the last two decades, outsourced personnel have been making many of these calls to businesses, working for dimes per hour. So, when you place a call, personally, you are joining a downscale, over-populated universe of workers, and your prospects expect to be stuck in a miserable, nearly incomprehensible experience. Until, that is, you make an explicit effort to send dramatically different signals, right away. I estimate you have ten to twenty seconds to: (1) State your name and that of your company. (2) Credential yourself so you will be treated with dignity and importance. (3) Provide a promising reason for your call. (4) Make a request of the person or voice mail sentry that she, he, or it can fulfill. (5) And above all, you need to seem polite, professional, and firm. I read a martial arts book that asserted, quite rightly that "Posture is a tool of command." People in the military, and those that are senior in their fields, tend to project a command-presence. They are polite, professional, and firm. Over the phone we have Three T's through which we stand tall, conveying our credibility and persuasion: Text, Tone and Timing. These are the variables we need to craft very carefully to get listeners to feel they're having a suitable, upscale experience. If we fail here, we can forget about recovering later. There won't be a second chance to make this telephonic first impression. Do it right, and suddenly, you might have started a beautiful and productive relationship! Dr. Gary S.
