subject: Feeding your chickens [print this page]

Once chicks are outside and are on layers pellets, it is important that you share out the chicken pellets if you are keeping quite a few chickens together, this ensures that they all get some and the smaller ones are not missing out. Monitoring your chicken feed is important and there are measuring scoops that allow you to add the correct amount to each pen but remember that lots of other factors play a part when feeding your chickens. Rats, mice and birds will happily feed on your chicken feed and whilst you may think your chickens are consuming a lot of food, it may be that they are having a little help. This can be expensive and you must ensure you do all you can to avoid this, not only because it is loss of food but because avoiding wild birds feeding near your chickens can help prevent them from catching certain diseases carries by wild birds.
