Try to get people to buy hip hop beats off of you! But you need to start somewhere that's why I would recommend a program called Sonic Producer if you want to start making hip hop beats. This is an online beat maker that lets you make beats right in your browser. Don't think that means it's lacking in quality however! This thing is a beast! It has a 16 track sequencer, a preset sound library with thousands of sounds, the ability to save to your computer as an mp3, and also teaches you how to make beats for FREE with membership to the site. Really not a bad deal if you ask me.
What I usually do is every 15-20 beats I make with Sonic Producer, I save them as mp3s to my computer (which is the sickest part about this program, IMO), and have friends over to listen to my mix tapes and make more beats.
