subject: Athens City Breaks Place Of Glory [print this page]

Athens city breaks offer village quality in a coastal locale. Filled with medieval, Byzantine, and 19th century monuments, this city surpasses many others in natural beauty. The quaint taverns, cafes, and markets, among a network of streets only adds to the ancient display of classical sites. Nightlife in Athens is absolutely amazing and has the most variety in all of the country. Many people come to enjoy the Athens Festival each year, which is revered by all who visit this cultural center.

There was quite a bit of upgrading performed in Athens, during preparation for the 2004 Olympic Games. This gave rise to numerous high quality hotels, additional sports venues, an expanded metro system, and a brand new airport. Many museums were also renovated during this time, which greatly added to their overall appeal. The creation of a pedestrian only archaeological promenade is greatly appreciated by all those who enjoy touring this economic powerhouse called Athens.

Even though there are separate districts that Athens is divided into, the main center of the city is called Constitution Square. Seeing as it is the middle point of the entire area, most of the prominent sightseeing locations are just a 30 minute walk from here.

For an afternoon of exploration on foot, a location that must be visited is the Plaka, which is below the Acropolis area. It is filled with narrow streets that wind around ancient buildings filled with souvenirs and busy taverns.

Anafiotika is also positioned at the base of Acropolis and has the atmosphere of a Greek village. The area was created in this style because of the workers from the island of Anafi that settled here long ago.

They came to Athens to construct a palace for King Otto and this little area manifested from their hard work as well. Sipping coffee and watching the people pass by is a relaxing pastime that many enjoy while visiting Athens. There are also a large number of restaurants, bars, and clubs to visit.

There are plenty of museums to take an afternoon stroll through and Athens city breaks aren't complete without a visit to the Monastiraki bazaar. While this bazaar is considered to be more of a working class area, the Kolonaki district is just the opposite as it is filled with wealth and fashion. Visiting the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Agora, Kerameikos, and the Theatre of Dionysus are just a few other options for sightseeing adventures.
