subject: Single Board Computers And Their Second Life [print this page]

With the success of LCD displays and TFT displays in our homes with television sets or computer screens, but also in businesses with industrial LCD displays and industrial touch screens, we tend to forget about the other products related to computers. With the wake of high tech and the rapid evolution of technology, some products really seem to be outdated and to have fallen into some dark place where they have been forgotten by most people.

One good example of an interesting product is the single board computer. They are probably not as well known as other computers and laptops but still used a lot and for various use.

Single board computers are different from other computers because they are built on a single circuit board. Those types of computers where first created around the seventies and have evolved over the years. Like personal computers or laptops now, they also have LCD displays screens.

Industrial single board computers enjoy the same evolution and are equipped with industrial touch screens or industrial LCD monitors.

Those single board computers or SBC where among the first computers to be used and where quite successful microcomputers in the seventies and later. But the arrival of the personal computer or PC changed everything.

The success of personal computers over single board computers does not mean that the production of the later stopped. Single board computers are still built and sold but with a different application than our personal computers.

Single board computers are now used with LCD touch screens for example in the gaming industry to be used as slot machines or video poker. Even if we do not know that they are there, other examples of the use of single board computers can be seen in public places in kiosks. They are also widely used in the industrial sector as machine controls.

In the end, single board computers are still used a lot as LCD displays or computers in public places or kiosks where they are used often and by the public. They are also used widely in plants.

We would be surprised to see the number of products that we have stopped using in our everyday life but that are still used in the business life in plants, building sites, or even in public places. It is also interesting to see that those products have evolved and have been adapted to suit particular needs and a specific use.
