subject: Choosing The Right Dog Bed For Your Puppy [print this page]

Those who have ever welcomed a puppy into their home are well aware that puppies love to sleep in a comfortable spot. Instead of letting him choose that comfortable spot, a better idea would be to get him his own dog bed.

Your new puppy's comfort is certainly a good reason for getting him his own special bed, but it's not the most important reason. Dog mattresses have been developed to keep a dog's fur in perfect condition.

If your puppy spends a lot of time sleeping on a carpet or the floor, his fur may grow at an irregular rate. Worse, he may start to develop bald patches in his fur. You can avoid this problem by providing a proper dog bed for him to sleep on.

There are several different kinds of dog beds to choose from. Any of them would be perfect for a puppy or full grown dog for that matter. Here's what to do when selecting a bed for your pup.

The most basic and cheapest type of dog bed is a dog mattress. These are available in many sizes and shapes. If you get this type of bed, try to find one that can be thrown in the wash so you can keep it fresh smelling and clean.

You should also consider how large your puppy will be when he has finished growing. Some of the larger breeds can almost double their size in just a few months. Buy a bed to fit a dog of this size as a puppy and it will certainly be too small once he is fully grown.

If you are getting a mattress to fit inside of a dog house, measure the dog house so you can get one that will fit as perfectly as possible. Even though this bed will be an outside bed, it will stay in better condition if it can be cleaned.

A variation on a dog mattress is a bolster type of bed. The bolster is a cushion that rims the mattress. With a bolster dog bed, your puppy can use the bolster to lie against which is something that many dogs love to do. Bolsters also make great pillows for your puppy.

Another kind of bed for your puppy is the cozy cave dog bed. It's perfect for a new puppy because he can snuggle up right inside the bed, leaving him feeling warm and cozy. A cozy cave bed is the ultimate in comfort while at the same time giving your puppy a safe and protected feeling. Just make sure you buy one large enough for him to grow into because chances are he'll like it so much he won't want to give it up.

These are only a small number of the dog beds that are on the market today. With such a large selection, you may even be able to coordinate your puppy's bed with your furniture.
