subject: Donut Business Equipment [print this page]

Before opening your donut business, either with a storefront or with a mobile set-up, you will need to think about the type of donut making machine to purchase. How will you keep them warm and fresh once they are made? Most machines are very easy to use, with the operator putting batter in one end and the product rolling out the other. You wouldn't have to do much in the process--just watch the machine work. The larger machines can make a large amount of donuts in a small amount of time but are not at all portable. On the other hand the smaller machines can be packed up and moved, but they cannot make as much product. There are pros and cons to each. So how do you chose?

Take bids from various donut manufacturers to help figure out which machine is right for your business. It may be that you can meet face-to-face with a company representative, or perhaps you can be referred to another business that purchased their machinery. That way you could see it work personally and talk to the company's owner. The larger machines are not portable but can produce a large amount of mini-donuts at a high rate of speed. Conversely, the smaller machines can be packed up and moved but they can't produce as many mini-donuts as the larger machines. Don't think about profit at this point, think about expenses. How many donuts will you need to produce and sell each day to stay in operation?

Plan out what equipment you need to just get the doors of your business open. Does it have to be a large, fancy machine that can produce a high volume in multiple shapes and flavors? If so, you will certainly have to pay more for that. As a small business, I would keep it simple in the beginning and evaluate my needs in a few years. Strive to have one product that is very well made and high in quality. That's what will get customers to return over and over.

Always consider a donut machine's warranty and the manufacturer's reputation. Are there favorable reviews on-line or can the manufacturer provide references you can contact? Don't waste your time buying a used machine thinking you are saving money. What if it breaks and the manufacturer will not service it because it's out of warranty? Better to buy new equipment as the manufacturer will then take the time to answer all your questions and help you get started.

Donut making machines are intimidating pieces of equipment, and most people starting a donut business have no experience running one. But they are not that difficult once you get the hang of it. Eventually, whatever machine you buy it will need servicing. Have a plan in place to handle this contingency so that you do not lose a lot of money in loss of sales. Perhaps the manufacturer can even show you some common problems with their equipment that you can repair yourself with little hassle.
