subject: Medicare Supplement Plan G Better Than Plan N? [print this page]

Medicare Supplement Plan N has created a stir in the marketplace. However, many seniors who are shopping for Medicare supplemental insurance have been unimpressed with the benefits and prices for this plan. A more popular low cost option that offers a better benefit package is Medicare Supplement Plan G, which is offered by many high quality insurance companies and considered to be the Best Medicare Supplement Plan by many brokers and agents.

Medicare Supplement Plan F has the most comprehensive benefit package and is the Best Medicare Supplement Plan available. Plan G is exactly like Plan F, except you have to pay the annual Part B deductible, which is $155 in 2010. With Medicare Supplement Plan N, you have to pay the Part B deductible, plus a $20 co-payment every time you visit the doctor. Most people prefer a more complete benefit package and opt for either Plan F or G.

Medicare Supplement Plan F is the most expensive plan available because it is the most comprehensive. Medicare Supplement Plan G is often $15 to $30 cheaper on a monthly basis, making it a more affordable option. Many seniors who are in good health prefer to purchase Medicare Supplement Plan G because they still receive excellent coverage, but are able to save money on a monthly basis. Medicare Supplement Plan N is slightly cheaper than Plan G, but the benefits arent quite as good, which can be an issue especially as you age.

The one unknown factor to consider when looking at Medicare Supplement Plan G and Plan N is the Part B deductible, which can change on an annual basis. In 2009 the Part B deductible was $135. However, that deductible jumped to $155 in 2010. We dont expect increases like this every year, but it does create a certain level of uncertainty when making a purchasing decision. Those who want to eliminate all uncertainty will purchase the Best Medicare Supplement Plan, which is Plan F.

Several of the Best Medicare Supplement companies offer plan G, including Mutual of Omaha, AARP, and Blue Cross. Not as many high-quality companies will be offering plan N, but you can still find this option for an affordable price. Regardless of which plan you decide to purchase, it is best to shop every company that offers these plans to make sure you get the best price available.

Experts have been answering several questions about Medicare supplement plan N including which companies are offering the plan, and what benefits are included in the plan. However, most insurance professionals conclude the Best Medicare Supplement Plan based on affordability is still Plan G.
