The Yangon Zoological Gardens has a long and eventful history. Phayres Museum commenced the collection of wildlife in Yangon in the year 1882. After generous contributions of funds were received from the public, development of the present day site began. The newly constructed zoological gardens were named in honour of Queen Victoria as the Victoria Memorial Park and Zoological Gardens. The highlight of the zoos early days was a white elephant owned by Burmas last king, King Thibaw.
Sadly, the zoo was looted and damaged at the time of World War II, but was repaired soon after. The Burmese authorities renamed the site The Rangoon Zoological Gardens and Parks. The complex was enlarged several years later to accommodate the new attractions that have established the compound as a major tourist destination.
