subject: Simple Steps In The Prevention Of Canine Ringworm [print this page]

There are so many causes of this disease that your dog can acquire. You have to know these factors to avoid your dog from contacting it again or to prevent this infection to happen in your dog. Prevention is better than cure as what the saying goes but is always true.

- Keep the place clean. Bacteria and even fungus usually dwells on areas that are dirty and damp. It means that a clean and dry place declines microorganisms to live on that area. Be particular on places where your dog usually stays like on its kennel, backyard, seats, bed, etc. It is to prevent the growth of any pathogens that might affect not only your dog but for you as well.

- Sterilize Accessories. When you try to groom your dog, make sure that the comb that you are using or anything that used on your dog are sterilized. Heat kills bacteria, germs or any organisms like fungus that causes Canine Ringworm. The fungus sticks on the hair strands so it is more likely to develop in combs because it is used on hair. This is also applicable to the utensils that are being used by your dog. That's the thing that is always associated to them. If the utensils are contaminated or dirty, this is one direct source where they get any diseases.

- Avoid contact to infected pets. The association with infected animals like cats and fellow dogs can expose your dog to the disease. The skin infection is so contagious that it can be transferred just easily. A crowded place together with an infected will give your dog a greater chance of catching the disease. A congested place has a warm temperature which is a god environment for fungus to grow. Keep away your dog from this to avoid it. Avoid exposure on contaminated areas or places where there's an infected animal.

- Prevent your dog from digging. Since soil is the main source of fungus that causes the Canine Ringworm, stop your dog from the habit of digging. This attitude will expose your dog to skin infection. If this is the case, try to distract your dog to some things that might entertain him like toys or any activity that will divert his attention.

- Quarantine suspected animals. If you have bought a new pet or someone has brought a pet while visiting in your house, try to separate the pet from your dog for you to observe any indications of skin infection on that particular animal. This is for the security of your dog in having an infection. Isolate the animal that you suspect of the skin infection especially if your dog has a low resistance.

- Proper hygiene. Bathe your dog everyday like the normal person does. This is to kill those bacteria or fungus that is about to evolve in your dog. Change frequently the beddings on your dog's place. Also, secure a clean food and water utensils that is being used on your pet. This is to make sure that the growth of fungus is impossible as well as the spread of Canine Ringworm.
