subject: Top 5 Places to Get Ideas For the Best Keywords For Your Website [print this page] Keyword research plays an important part when it comes to getting your website to rank well in the search engines. Just imagine how disappointed you will be after you've spend weeks and even months to optimize your website for keywords that you think are good just to find out there's other keywords that will get you two or three times the traffic.
How to find the proper keywords for your website?
Here's a list that will help you identify the right keywords for your site:
1. Compile a list and jot down all the obvious keywords you will be using for your website. For example, if you are going to build a website about diabetes, keyword phrases like "symptoms of diabetes", "diabetes treatment" etc... would be a good start. After you finished choosing as many keywords as possible, take a closer look at the list and try to think of keywords that are RELATED to your niche. In our case keywords like "insulin" and "blood sugar" could make a nice addition to our list as they are related to our topic.
2. Check your website logs. Every serious webmaster will have a tracking script of some king installed on their website (the one I use is Google Analytics). Analyze your log files and see what keywords your visitors are searching for in order to find your website. Add these keywords to your list.
3. Spy on your competition. This little dirty trick is actually my favorite. Make a list with your top 10 competitors on Google. These websites rank high in the search engines so they must be doing something right. Look at their source code and find out what keywords they are using. Right click anywhere on your competitor's page and select "View Source" or "View Page Source". Usually you will find the keywords in the title, description and name meta tags. It is also recommended to read the article and come up with new ideas for keywords.
4. Ask for help. Give your family and friends your keywords list and ask them if they have anything to add. Ask them what keywords will they be searching for to find your diabetes website?
5. Always be on a lookout. Carry a pen and a small notebook wherever you go. We usually get the best ideas in the strangest places, and when our mind is relaxed. Imagine yourself browsing through some magazines at your favorite coffee shop. You glance over a magazine called "Diet for diabetes" and you think: "this seems this like a good keyword for my website".
Even though is seems like a lot of work, researching for keywords it is well worth it. If you do not choose the right keywords, you might find yourself with a website that does not receive a lot of visitors, or even worst: no visitors at all.
