subject: Visiting the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art [print this page] Glasgow is chock full of great things to see and do. It is also an ideal place to visit if you happen to have an interest in art, because it is the home of the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art.
Anyone who loves art will like what they see when they arrive at their destination here, because the building itself looks extremely impressive from the outside. It certainly has a commanding feel about it, designed as it is in the neo-Classical style.
What about the actual contents of the museum? What impressions will you form of the interior when you finally step inside?
The gallery focuses its attentions on temporary exhibitions, so even if you have visited in the past you will see a very different selection of artworks if you visit again now. Local artists have their work shown here but the gallery does not restrict its exhibitions to local works. It also shows a wide range of artworks from other parts of the UK, so as to give an overall picture of how modern art has developed in the country.
You may not think you would recognise any names of the artists here, since the collection is firmly a modern one. You would be wrong. Many people are familiar with the likes of David Hockney and Beryl Cook, both of whom have work on display here. You may also come across new artists you have not yet heard of, but whose work is appealing for one reason or another.
This is part of the joy of visiting this particular museum. Modern art takes many forms and this collection gives you the opportunity to find out more about it. If you think you know all about art, think again lots of artists use different techniques and forms to create their works and you are likely to see them all in the museum.
One final point the building itself is easy enough to find because it has an impressive faade. Watch out too for the statue of the Duke of Wellington sitting astride his horse. This is located right outside the front of the building. You will know you are looking at the right statue because it almost always sports a traffic cone on top of it. Since removing it on a regular basis never worked, you should now be able to see the cone sitting majestically on top of the Duke's head no matter when you pay a visit. It's certainly something to look out for!
It's easy enough to book Glasgow flights into the city if you are travelling from further afield. Wherever you are coming from, you'll enjoy the delights the Gallery of Modern Art has to show you.
