subject: Butterbur - An Effective Harmless Way To Reduce Migraines [print this page]

People who suffer from migraine attack would with no doubt prefer not have them at all. They would even be grateful if in the least their migraine episodes would be reduced in number in case eliminating the headache is impossible. They would be happier if this could be done without having to use synthetic pharmacological.

There might be a hope for those who suffer migraines and this hope is butterbur. Butterbur is indigenous to northern Africa, Europe and Asia. What makes this particular plant interesting is its root. Research conducted shows that the frequency of migraine episodes can be effectively reduced by consuming the extract of butterbur roots. Research showed that in eighty percent of the participants the extract reduced the migraine episodes frequency by up to fifty percent.

Butterbur has been predominantly in use in Asia and Europe. But the last decade has seen American doctors looking at it as a possible herbal preventative for migraines. There was a study carried out as from 2000 to 2005 and this established the effectiveness of the herb. The study is referred to as the double blind, placebo-controlled studies.

In the study, the migraine frequency dropped in the range between thirty seven percent and sixty two percent. Moreover the side effects observed in the participants were minimal. Minor gastrointestinal upset is the only side effect observed. As of the time of this writing it considered safe to use butterbur with other migraine medications. Before you decide to add herbal medicine to your treatment routine it is highly recommended that you seek a healthcare professional.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are contained in crude butterbur. The pyrrolizidine alkaloids are toxic and particularly harmful to the human liver. It is therefore necessary that when you are purchasing butterbur you should ensure that it has the PA-free label.

However, the amount of the toxic alkaloids contained in butterbur roots is generally very small. Its concentration is less than 0.01 percent. When you decide to take the butterbur treatment regime, you should take the supplement for a period of four to six months. Six months is the maximum period recommended for each course of the treatment regime. Should the migraine frequency rise, it is advisable to take the treatment regime again for another period of four to six months. Between each treatment regime there should be a period of rest, this is a one month period in which you do not use the butterbur product.

All types of pain distract us from leading our lives normally, try butterbur and win back the opportunity to achieve your goals.
