Sandown on the Isle of Wight is a sought after English seaside resort. Located on the beautiful Isle of Wight it is noted for its stunning golden beaches and surrounding scenery. The last time a census was conducted was way back in 1991. At the time, the population was 5,299. This figure has obviously increased since then. The town is twinned with the town of Tonnay-Charente in France, and St Pete Beach in Florida, USA.

The Isle of Wight is considered to be one of Britain's most exquisite places. Although it measures only 23 x 13 miles, it is steeped in history and has award winning beaches and scenery to die for. Over 50 percent of the island's area has received the status of AONB, meaning 'area of outstanding beauty'.

The town is characterized by its distinct Victorian atmosphere and is surrounded with natural beauty in every direction. The National Trust administers a chalk down, Culver Down. The public is free to visit the area. Here there is an abundance of seabirds and wildlife typical to chalk down regions.

Further inland are the Sandown Levels, one of the Isle of Wight's rare freshwater wetlands. Here you will find the Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve which is a haven for bird-watching. The Borthwood woodlands are also inland where you can stroll along charming woodland trails. The sight of the bluebells in spring is something to behold.

One of the most important wildlife preservation areas is the Special Area of Conservation which incorporates the sub-littoral area of the sea. This includes marine life in the sea bed and on the reefs. Portions of a petrified forest can be seen at low tide and pieces of petrified wood are frequently washed ashore.

The esplanade at Sandown is lined with some picturesque Victorian and Edwardian hotels that overlook the beach. The amusement center at Sandown Pier provides great family entertainment. There are arcade games and a kids' play area. So when the weather is unsuitable for swimming, the kids can spend time here.

There are many other interesting places to visit in Sandown, Isle of Wight. You can see regal tigers at the Sandown Zoo. Other family oriented places include the Sandham Gardens with its play park, 'crazy golf', and skate park, while the Dinosaur Isle Museum houses some awesome exhibits. In this town you will find many gastro-pubs and restaurants that offer local cider and beer. There is no airport on the island. It is accessible by ferry or train only.
