subject: Breast Augmentation And Power [print this page]

When women choose to undergo breast augmentation surgery they are engaging in an power dynamic that has many societal, philosophical, and sexual ramifications. The usual reason women choose breast implants, is for enhancing or improving self-esteem. There are many legitimate reasons why women want to improve their appearance and feel better about themselves. These range from a feeling of inadequacy due to age and the adverse side-effects of pregnancy on the body, to simple vanity and narcissism.

One thing is for sure, all women choose cosmetic surgery procedures to feel more beautiful, and hence, more powerful. When women want to feel powerful they usually turn themselves into sex objects by trying to make themselves attractive to the male gaze. The irony here is that women who choose this sexual object path to feel empowered end up becoming degraded objects of sexual fantasy and do so by playing right into the hands of the sexist male paradigm that dis-empowers women as it turns them into sources of fantasy fulfillment.

This is the cruel truth that most women face: power comes from sexual attractiveness. Without this sexual allure, women must seek power through education, financial status, or some other alternative phenomenon far from the perspective of sexist and exploitative media culture.

Women who choose breast augmentation succumb toe the dominant female exploitation paradigm in a vain attempt to reclaim their youth (and defy gravity) and beauty. But these attempts are in vain because no amount of cosmetic surgery can truly make a woman beautiful just like no amount drug use can truly make someone happy. Beauty is a mysterious and multifarious experience that encompasses age, self-esteem, intelligence, fashion, style, sexuality, confidence and much more al things that have nothing to do with cosmetic surgery. Breast augmentation is simply a futile exercise in self-improvement that only delays the real quest for beauty and sex.
