subject: The Return Of The 80's [print this page]

Times are a-changing! When you hear people talk about the good old days, very rarely do they refer to the time when Sinatra was the best crooner and the Gibson girl look was in demand. Oftentimes, they refer to the 80s, a time when music, movies and fashion became a culture of its own worldwide.

The 80s is marked a period of great changes. In music alone, there were a number of genres that were rising. New names were becoming popular. The relatively unknown Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone started became known as the legendary Madonna whose catchy songs, Borderline, Like A Virgin, Into The Groove and Crazy For You are still well-loved pieces of todays generation. The once-upon-a-time front act of the Jackson 5 started earning a name for himself to later become the undisputed King of the Pop.

In the world of fashion, 80s became dominated by the need to express ones self. Bright colors were the theme of the day. Baggy jeans and oversized jewelries are a common sight even with celebrities. For those who would like to look classy, the fashion trend set by the late Princess Diana was the way to go.

The television also had a great impact on the children of the 80s. With the colored television gaining popularity, more and more people have become addicted to a number of soap operas. The children of the 80s were there when The Simpsons started attracting a huge following. Simpsons t-shirts were a hit among teenagers who would like to be seen as part of the cool crowd.

In the movie scene, slasher flicks as well as comedies and fantasy were a hit among all age brackets. Although the technology used then is a bit rough compared to what we have today, movies such as the Star Wars and ET were lauded as genius projects. The 2004 file, Napoleon Dynamite, which has gathered quite a following, with some of them even going to the extent of getting Napoleon dynamite shirts / costumes, actually makes several references to the 80s; something which you might not notice if you were not born during the said era.

The 80s continue, to this day, to wield its influence over music, fashion and movies. Although people of today who are into Simpsons t-shirts may not know it, they are actually taking a journey back in time whenever they sit down and watch an episode of their favorite cartoon.
