subject: How To Clean Your Bathroom Toilet [print this page]

Firstly, preparation is the key hereFirstly, preparation is the key here. You need to gather together the following items before you even begin. It's always advisable to use separate gloves for the toilet, a good way to do this is to say use a red glove for the toilet itself. Try thinking red for danger and this will remind you to use this colour glove only for the toilet where the most potential nastiness lives!

The other items you will need to have at hand are the following:

A soft sponge

A cream cleanser

A toilet brush

Kitchen roll or similar

The next step is to move any items from around the toilet, I always remove the toothbrushes from around the sink as who knows what gets blown into the air when you open the toilet seat. Also move anything else that can fall into the toilet by accident, there's nothing worse than having to fish out your soap holder from the loo.

With your soft sponge gently apply to the seat and inside the toilet, it is important that you do not use an abrasive cleaner as this will put scratch marks onto the lid of your toilet. This first stage will remove large stains and dust from the toilet it also allows for any deep cleaning action of the agent to penetrate the grime inside of the toilet bowl. At this stage I usually gently rinse away and surplus cleaning cream.

Next agitate the cream cleanser inside the bowl with your toilet brush, you can be extra vigorous here. Make sure you get all the way under the toilet rim too as it is this area that harbours the majority of hidden germs. You may well be surprised at how dirty under there it is. Brush as far down the u-bend as is possible, bringing up a good foam as you do so. Finally flush the toilet so you can then ascertain if you have missed any spots. If you have then repeat the last step again until all marks have gone.

Now it is time to use your kitchen towel to wipe dry the exterior of the toilet, using paper is more hygienic because you can throw it away afterwards, a cloth would become quickly infected with bacteria and would spread germs.

You can then buff up any chrome on the toilet with a dry duster to bring it to a nice sheen.

To finish you should clean all around the base of the toilet and also the floor which may have caught some nasty splashes. To keep your toilet looking and smelling clean I would always add an under rim bleaching block or put one in the cistern, this will give a nice clean smell and also a blue colour to your water.
