subject: Tips On Getting The Best Lawn Care Equipment [print this page]

A couple of centuries ago, the only means to cut grass was using a scythe. Actually, most people didn't even see the necessity to cut the grass back then. Lawn maintenance equipment has progressed a great deal since that time. When it comes to proper maintenance of your patch of grass, you can find a wide range of lawn maintenance tools and equipment that will make the job so much easier.

The first critical piece of equipment is unquestionably a lawnmower. Grass needs to be cut on a regular basis in order to remain in good condition. This will almost certainly be your most costly purchase when it comes to lawn maintenance. However, if you take care of it well, it should last you for many years to come. You can choose from electric, both conventional and cordless, gas powered or riding mowers, subject to your budget and the size of your property.

A lawnmower alone won't keep your yard trim, however. A lawn trimmer is required for spots where the lawnmower won't fit. One option is the standard lawn shears that look like oversized scissors. The latest versions of this device have long handles that extend toward the ground, with the blades parallel to the grass, which means that it's easier on your back. Another option is an electric device that utilizes a spinning plastic string to slice off weeds and grass. The string rotates at ultra high speeds and is very powerful, so use caution when using it.

One more piece of equipment you will need is a spreader. It will enable you to evenly spread products such as grass seed, weed killer and fertilizer that will keep your lawn looking its best. You can purchase a spreader in a push style, much like a small wheelbarrow, with little holes in the base and a mechanism that releases the contents as you go. Or, you can purchase a hand held unit. This is generally a boxy plastic container that, when you turn its handle, empties its contents onto the lawn below. This type of spreader is more suitable for the application of products to small patches of grass.

Next on the list is a rake, which is essential for collecting up the leaves that fall on the lawn in the autumn. If left intact, the leaves will very likely do harm to your grass during the winter months. When the snow melts in the springtime, you'll discover that the lawn has become suffocated and parched by the presence of the leaves. You will find that even though you thoroughly raked the leaves last fall, the lawn has still become compressed during the wintertime. This thatching effect will prevent oxygen and other essential nutrients from working their way into the soil. Your rake will turn out to be useful once more to get rid of the thatch and enable the grass to breathe.

When choosing equipment to care for your grass, always purchase the highest quality implements possible and take good care of them. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for maintenance, operation and safety. Remember that the sharp cutting edges on this type of equipment have the potential to cause serious injury.
